Albums that Saved 2020

While everyone is sharing their top 10 albums of 2020, in true Libra fashion, I can’t just limit it to only 10 when 2020 gave us one of the best years of music! Seriously, if you slip on your rose colored Airpods, 2020 kicked ass with its new music and set the tone for the rest of the decade.

If you missed my first article “Best Albums of the First half of 2020,” from July you can read the full article and album descriptions here. Since there are so many amazing albums in the second half too, I’ll give a short recap.

WOW! The first half of 2020 was insane for new music, and the second half delivered even more amazing albums. COVID aside, we truly were blessed this year. Not only did we receive new albums from Lane 8, Disclosure, Odesza, The Avalanches, and Duke Dumont, but we also received multiple remix albums in the second half to carry

BRONSONBronson
August 7, 2020

Amidst the media chaos this year came an announcement that shook Odesza fans to their core. With one single image the electronic duo announced the release of No. Sleep 12 one month into lockdown. I personally screamed for about 5 minutes and my roommates had to ask if someone died. While the new mix was a welcomed surprise, an even bigger one shortly followed with the announcement that Odesza and Golden Features had finished an entire album under their new project Bronson. Now, you can’t listen to this album as Odesza or a follow up to A Moment Apart, but instead an entirely new sound. Delivering heavier and darker sounds, Bronson fits the theme of this year.

Energy – Disclosure
August 28, 2020

During one of their many livestreams this year, Disclosure let slip that they were sitting on over 100 tracks. While they may not have release every single one of them, they have dropped an insane amount of new numbers between their Esctacy EP, Energy, Energy Deluxe, and finally Energy Special Edition. The third studio album from Disclosure takes listeners on a cultural safari with energetic collaborations from Kelis, Chanel Tres, Common. and Fatoumata Diawara

Club Future Nostalgia – Dua Lipa, The Blessed Madonna
August 28, 2020

Mentally I live at Club Future Nostalgia. Its the only way I was able to get through 2020 where the only place I visited outside my bedroom was the gym. Dua Lipa teamed up with electronic producer The Blessed Madonna for perhaps one for one of the most advantageous remix albums ever. Featuring a wide range of talented and multi-genre artists from Jamiroquai, Missy Elliot, Yaeji, Paul Woolford, BLACKPINK, and even Gwen Stefani, each artist brought something unique and special to their track. From start to finish the album delivers a euphoric club feeling of laced with the nostalgia of the 80’s when disco ruled the dancefloor right up to the turn of the millennium with Madonna.

Brightest Lights Remixed – Lane 8
September 24, 2020

Okay but seriously, what is better than a Lane 8 album? TWO LANE 8 albums. He jumpstarted 2020 with his Brightest Lights album which not only made my list for the first half of 2020, but saved my mental sanity. Then, in the second half of the longest year ever, he delivers an equally as stunning remix album sprinkled with goodness from This Never Happened artists Ben Bohmer, Jerro, Le Youth , Massane and a surprise CloZee remix. DAMN DANIEL chill. But also thank you so much for providing the soundtrack to my 2020. The original album was on repeat and then had to compete on Spotify for listens when the Remixed album came out.

Year Zero – Tchami
October 23, 2020

Based on the album’s title Year Zero, maybe Tchami knew something we? As in this year marks ‘year zero’ for both music and the world; then we all start fresh and rebuild in 2021. I mean he does have friends in higher places and our prayers were answered with its release. Its hard to believe that this album is the debut album from the father of future house who has set the blueprint for so many others. 2 years in the making, the 16-track album is a true testament to Tchami‘s versatility as he carefully meshes bass house bangers like “All on Me” with Zhu and “Praise” featuring Gunna with feel good tracks “The Light” and “Born Again.”

Dark Matter – Camelphat
October 30, 2020

Who hasn’t been sipping on Camelphats’s cola the last few years? Since their breakout hit, this house duo has proven that any track they touch is going to be phat. With the release of Dark Matter, they solidified their position as not only dancefloor DJ, but as true artists masterful in their craft. The album gave a home to some of their previous hits “Panic Room,” “Be Someone”, “Breathe”, and even included a special Dark Matter edit of “Cola” as well as introducing us to new favorites “Easier” and ” Inbetween the Lines”. The timing of Dark Matter’s release the day before Halloween, seems appropriate as we transitioned from the darkness of club dancefloors into the pensiveness of our homes.

Second NatureNetsky
October 30, 2020

The year is 2020 and I am crying to drum and bass? YES. After a four year hiatus the king of drum and bass, Netsky has returned with his album Second Nature on his label “Hospital Records”. The 18 track album features fellow drum and bass icon Sub Focus, Rudimental, and Hybrid Minds. Each track on the album is incredible in its own right, but all come together like second nature for a easy listening experience. Standout tracks include “Hold On” with Becky Hill, “Mixed Emotions”, “Destiny”, “Broken Bottles”, and “Let Me Hold You”. Had this album come out earlier in the year it would have easily made my Spotify wrapped. Everything from the lyrics to production, even to Netskys special album showcase from Antwerp Zoo were certainly worth the four year wait.

Out Here With YouATTLAS
November 6, 2020

Like many other artists this year, ATTLAS released two albums. His debut album Lavender God was released in January and showcased his talents at mood music curator. Unlike other artists on this list, instead of a remixing his album he gifted us with an entirely new album and concept complete with stunning 3D visuals from friend iamcyclo. ATTLAS describes the album as

a chance to catch my breath amidst this all. Calmer and more hopeful; it is the result of the small areas of positivity we can still control this year…”

I truly love how each album both compliments and contrasts each other. Out Here With You was a lovely surprise release at the end of the year to carry us through to the next.

Mr. Good The RemixesArdalan
November 20, 2020

Perhaps one of the saddest event cancellations I received this year was the postponement of West Coast CampoutDirybird would be celebrating its 15th anniversary and I’m sure were preparing for an incredible weekend to celebrate. While campout was greatly missed, the Mr. Good Remixes filled in for the legendary family set with remixes from fellow Dirtybirds Justin Jay, Kill Frenzy, OMNOM, The Martin Brothers and more. Each artist brought their own signature flare and take to their respective tracks, while maintain the weirdness of the original. It brought a tear to my eye to hear everyone come together to remix Ardy’s album. I hope that we can all be together for a family set soon.

We Will Always Love YouThe Avalanches
December 20, 2020

Can you believe its been 20 years since their debut album Since I Left You? After missing the note on their sophomore album Wildflower, Australian group The Avalanches are back in business with their third studio album. The 25 track album tackles the bittersweet emotions of life, death, and the in between as told through famous samples all wrapped up with a heartwarming message. For this interstellar record, The Avalanches tapped influential artists  MGMT, Leon Bridges, and Jamie XX to help tell its story. Overall the album tugs on your nostalgia with its older sample use, while allowing the listeners to feel present and hopeful for the future.

Well that’s a wrap on 2020! This year delivered on incredible music. I can’t wait to hear what’s released in 2021.

2021 Grammy Nominations: Disclosure, Flume, Diplo, Madeon, Deadmau5, Kaytranada

Its the most wonderful (controversial) time of the year! The Grammy nominations. Earlier this week the 20201 Grammy nominations were released and featured major electronic names such as Diplo, Deadmau5, Disclosure, Flume, Madeon , and more. Shortly after the nominations were released, EDM twitter did what they did best, and get butt hurt about the nominations not representing dance music as a whole.

This year’s nominations welcomes back Diplo, Disclosure, and Flume. These electronic artists are no stranger to the Grammy’s having been nominated and taken home the coveted golden gramophone. SIDEPIECE “On my Mind,” nomination for Best Dance Recording . Diplo‘s 9th nomination. Currently he holds three Grammy’s: two for his work with Jack U and in 2019 he won Best Dance Recording for “Electricity” with Mark Ronson and Dua Lipa Let’s see if he is feeling lucky two years in a row.

Taken from Disclosure’s Facebook

Unsurprising to see under the names for nominations is UK Electronic duo Disclosure. They received two nominations, one for their latest album Energy, under the Best Dance/Electronic Album and a second for their single “My High.” They have previously been nominated 5 times, since they erupted into the scene; receiving a nomination for for each of their albums. In 2016 they took home a Grammy for Best Full Length Studio Recording for their sophomore album “Caracal”.

Flume has received one nomination for Best Dance Recording for his single “The Difference,” featuring Toro y Moi. This is his fourth Grammy nomination. In 2017 he won Best Dance/Electronic Album for his iconic album Skin.

Some new faces to the Grammy nominations include Madeon for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Good Faith, Baauer, Arca, SIDEPIECE, and more. Perhaps the biggest new face and name to this year’s list of Grammy nominations is Haitian-Canadian producer Kaytranada who was nominated for three Grammys: Best Dance Recording– “10%”, Best Dance/Electronic Album – “Bubba”, and Best New Artist .

Taken from Kaytranada’s Facebook

While the Grammy’s may seem overrated and inaccurate to many in the electronic music scene, dance music has come along way with its nominations and impact on the awards. I’ve always enjoyed watching the performances and guessing who was going to take home the award. After a crazy year for music and live entertainment, its something I will be looking forward to start next year off.

Get Freaky with ONE&TWO EP Out Now on Nightenjin

One of my must watch labels this year Nightenjin has been delivering consistent new music from some of electronic music’s rising artists. The Freaky EP from ONE&TWO, an unlikely duo from Las Vegas and Kansas City, is a two-track EP that highlights the versatility of house music.

The first track “Freak,” is appropriately named as its ready to be played out at your next house party. Embodying the bass house culture, “Freak” is full of nasty chanting and modular wobbles that will get your body moving from the couch. The second track “Freedom,” is a total sound flip that kicks off with a tribal beat before building into a deep tech-house hook. The smooth vocals are practically begging listeners to slide onto the dancefloor.

Dance The Rest of 2020 Away with VNSSA “Dance Night EP”

While 2020 may have put a stop to VNSSA‘s festival calendar, she hasn’t let that stop her from dominating Twitch this year. Between channeling her creative energy into launching “Its Good TV” with fellow house artists Ardalan, Walker & Royce, and The Martin Brothers, and balancing appearances on Space Yacht, Desert Hearts, and Insomniac she just might need another year at home to relax. Furthermore, this Dirtybird diva has thrown herself into the studio to experiment with sounds outside her comfort zone. Showcasing her diversity as an artist, earlier this year she released her Dazed EP on Box of Cats, and now she’s back with another memorable 2 track EP Dance Night, which is already broke the #1 spot in Breaks Releases Beatport and #2 in House Releases.

VNSSA took a chance on this EP as its a departure from her normal sound, but the risk paid off because I think its one of her best sounds yet. Teleporting her listeners to an alternate dimension where break beats and acid basslines live, “Dance Night,” immediately captures the listeners ears with the commanding vocal over the break line. The second track “Out of My Head,” features vocals from Bianca Gardner and gives listeners a trippy techno vibe. Last but certainly not least, is a spectacular remix from The Martin Brothers Justin and Christian Martin.

“Any time I’ve played ‘Dance Night’ OR ‘Out Of My Head,’ the collective enthusiasm has been wild to witness. For our remix, Justin and I wanted to bring a modern update to the rolling & breaky house from the early 2000’s. PLAY THEM LOUD!!!”
Christian Martin

As sad as I was to not get the chance to see her kick ass live at major festivals across the country, I am here for all the new sounds and production she’s been working on in the studio during this down time.

Listen to VNSSA’s Dance Night EP out now on Trippy Ass Technologies.

Artist Spotlight: MASTERIA

Written by Sina Watson

Detroit based house producer MASTERIA had an astronomical breakout year in 2019 playing alongside Dance Music’s biggest names including Alesso, Malaa, Griz and a #1 Release on Beatport. Riding the momentum of last year’s energy, he hit the new year high with multiple releases on well respected record labels such as Insomniac Records, Mau5trap, and Confession Label.

Last October we had the pleasure of sitting down with MASTERIA at Freaky Deaky Festival and I am so excited to have him back as our Artist of the Month this year! Since then he has taken the scene by storm with his signature dark house sound that blurs together heavy bass elements with groove inducing house.

We caught up with MASTERIA on Zoom and he talks about growing up in Detroit and how living in a major tour stop city has had an impact on his music journey.

Who/what has been your inspiration for producing?

All the artists who paved their way creating house and techno before me inspire me the most. Especially those early techno innovators who came out of Detroit, but I find inspiration in everything – in art, movies, people, everything.

What has been your favorite performance of your career?

Performing at Spring Awakening this past year was one of my favorites. It was amazing to share the stage with so many other talented DJ’s, as well as connect with all the fans at the festival all weekend.

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

Running a badass taqueria.

For those of you that don’t know, MASTERIA is incredibly passionate about his Mexican restaurant concept that includes chips and salsa and house every weekend. I don’t know about you, but MASTERIA, margs, and house music sounds like that absolute Monday move.

Later on in the interview, MASTERIA spoke to his experiences and hardships of pursuing his dream through music. He found himself burnt out from the long hours of working at a tech start-up and escaping through house music.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Dreams only work if you do.

It’s your last set of your life. What is your opening and closing with?

Tchami – Afterlife

Its no wonder a Tchami track was chosen, as MASTERIA has had multiple releases on his Confession Label, including his 2020 “Underground EP” with Ekonovah.

Hop in the Passenger Seat of Houston DJ MizzMegan’s RV [TRILLVO Interview]

Written by Sina Watson

Last week we had the chance to premiere Houston based DJ and now producer MizzMegan “RV Edits”. There’s a lot more than meets the eye about this Houston native, shes a dancer, a student, a teacher, and if you’ve started following her on Instagram an incredible cook! Now that you’ve had the chance go take the trip down memory lane, lets get to know the lady behind the wheel.

How long have you been producing/DJing?

DJing 2 years, Producing 9 months

What made you want to start producing/performing?

I’ve performed as a dancer since I was 4. Justin Jay encouraged me to produce music because of my dance background, specifically tap dance, and my lifelong relationship with music.

Who are some top dream collabs and inspirations?

Pharrell, Timbaland, Prince, Justin Jay, Vance Lawrence. I want to make some edits with Danny Goliger!

Where did you get your start?

I threw my first show and played my first DJ gig the same night, for Henry Was while he was on tour with Thumpasaurus. This show grew into the first-ever Fantastic Voyage (FV) residency, and got my name out for other bookings.

What are some of your biggest musical influences or sources of inspiration?

I grew up on 90s dance, disco, funk, and early pop music. Prince and Michael Jackson were megastars around that time. I got into hiphop music in the early 2000s so Pharrell and Timbaland were producing huge hits then. As far as my immediate friend group, people that inspire me daily, definitely Justin Jay. Even though we don’t live close he’s great at making me feel supported even from a distance. He has supported me while I’ve stepped into new parts of myself I was afraid of before.

Vance Lawrence is someone I love being in the studio with. We vibe really well together, and the workflow is fun. He’s open and creative, and he made me realize I can really get down on tambourine, lol. He has a larger perspective on the industry because he’s had success as a DJ overseas, so I can really dream big with him and not get bogged down in the small stuff.

What is your creative process like?

When it comes to making music, I just try shit, lol. If I have an idea, I at least always make a note or start the project right then, and see what comes of it. Sometimes I stick with it for 10 minutes, and table it. Sometimes it catches momentum, and in a few hours I have a complete song. Justin gave me great advice about always trying to finish projects, so I try not to let things sit for too long untouched. I’ve become less of a perfectionist, so I see the value in something being finished rather than perfect. I’m a lot more comfortable having an imperfect draft and knowing I can work through the rough spots, instead of quitting a project because it isn’t “good” enough.

How would you describe your sound and how did you develop it?

I think my sound is pretty percussion-driven because I’m a tap dancer. I gravitate to music that has a groove, that’s sort of primal in the way it makes me want to move my body. If it makes me dance, it goes in my library. As a dancer and choreographer I’ve spent most of my life making decisions about music based on whether or not it makes me want to move. DJing and producing dance music came pretty naturally to me in that regard, when I finally let myself just go for it.

I’m also a sucker for sax samples, because I was a sax player when I was younger, specifically in jazz band, so I like dance music that’s rooted in jazz also. Jazz music and tap dance have an entangled history; a lot of musicians I find myself vibing with also have some type of jazz background. Funk. Disco. I also love most songs that have a soul clap in them lol

What do you want people to know / understand about the music you create?

Making music is an amazing way that I’ve found to honor myself and my creative spirit. Music was always in my heart, but for years I came up against a lot of pushback that success looked like something else that wasn’t rooted in creativity at all. I was an avid people pleaser and for a long time I gave in to those ideals of what being successful looked like and the path I should take to get there. I hid away huge parts of who I really was, and my journey with DJing and music has been, above all, a huge celebration of accepting that person back a little more every day. This journey has made me happy and whole again, it’s led me to some of the most valuable relationships of my life, and I hope when people hear my music they feel that big piece of my heart that I’m so grateful to have said yes to again.

What has been your favorite performance?

I played this small room upstairs at Axelrad in Houston, and the energy of that crowd was something I’ve never experienced anywhere else. There weren’t that many people there when I started playing, but at one point I looked up from the decks and suddenly the room was almost completely full. Turns out they’d started playing my set on the speakers downstairs, and people just started coming up in groups. The crowd was very vocal about letting me know what they were feeling, their energy was so easy to read and match, and then we just rode the wave for the rest of my set. They were shouting and whistling, the whole room was dancing, I felt so much love from them; I could’ve played for them all night.

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

Aside from dance music, I’m really involved in the dance community in a lot of other ways. I’ve been teaching dance for over ten years, and I also study Human Performance and Clinical Research, specifically Dance Science and Dance Medicine. I love academia, and I hope to contribute research to the dance community that will help clinicians understand dancers as athletes the same way Sports Medicine recognizes professional athletes of other more commercialized disciplines. NBA and NFL medical teams are hugely staffed and funded, while its hard for professional dancers to even get proper health care coverage through company contracts. I’m a huge advocate for dancers’ healthcare and wellness. Dancers are athletes but they are also artists and storytellers and it’s so important to afford them the proper care for their bodies so that they can have longer professional careers and can continue to express themselves through movement, and so that we can continue to experience their art.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Enjoy being a beginner! When I first started DJing and making music, I constantly reminded myself, “this is the worst you will ever be at this as long as you keep trying.”

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

I wish more people would genuinely support each other, and realize that someone else having success doesn’t take anything away from your own ability to be successful. I’ve gotten most of the opportunities that I have because I had the courage to say yes and the guts to see it through, and I didn’t have to take anything away from anyone else to make it happen. I’ve actually done my best work when I’ve extended my opportunities to others, and tried to create things that would build people around me also. I’ve never been stingy with success or seen it as just mine. A lot of people operate from a place of worry that there isn’t enough of anything to go around. Business can take the heart out of the art, and its unfortunate when events feel empty and like they’re rooted in fear and competition.

Something your fans would be surprised to know about you?

Most people are usually just surprised by my age, lol. I have a pretty good baby face, I always get told I look 10 years younger than I am. I’m 33! I also didn’t start DJing until I was 31, which is “late” to a lot of people. There’s this weird pressure to have your shit figured out before you’re 30, but for me it’s been really fun to keep stepping into new parts of myself, becoming more of who I am all the time. I used to think about my age a lot more, and let it scare me out of stuff, but I’m grateful in a lot of ways for where I am right now. I know myself a lot better than I did in my 20s, and I probably couldn’t have handled all of this pressure when I was younger.

What is one message you would give to your fans? What does your music aim to say?

Everything you want in life is out there for you, if you’re looking! I hope people look at this journey I’m on and feel like they can keep working and achieving whatever they want. I never imagined I would find myself in music the way that I did, in the time that I did. But I can look back and see all the ways that I was getting prepared for this for a while now. Just trust the path you’re on, keep leaning in to things that feel like they’re made for you. Stay curious, and follow that curiosity. Look for more solutions and less problems. Don’t be afraid to suck at something, and if you love it enough just keep at it. It won’t feel like work all the time, and when it does, the work will be worth it…

Life is truly a Fantastic Voyage.

What does the future hold and what are you hopes for the songs you’re about to release?

Once we’re able to travel again, I would love to expand the FV shows to a few more cities where I have great friends that I would love to collaborate with, and also do a second round of our residency in Houston.

I’ve made a few more edits since wrapping up this first EP, but I think my next project will be really focused on exploring my MIDI-interface tap floor, and combining my worlds of dance and music in a more concrete way. I can’t wait to see all of the new things I can discover with this unique way of creating music, and to do things that no one has done before.

I hope this first EP gives people a peek into the songs I grew up jamming fused with the sounds I’m digging today, and that there is at least one track on the collection that makes someone smile or dance. I’d love to hear some of these edits played by DJs who can reach even more people than I would be able to, but really I’m just proud of what I’ve made on this first release, and even if everyone hates all of these songs I at least proved to myself that I could finish this project and do something that once felt impossible to me.

I can’t wait to hear more of MizzMegan’s future edits. Her “RV Edits” now available to purchase on Bandcamp. Listen on Spotify below.

Kyle Kinch Talks Tampa House and His Duke Dumont Remix “The Fear” [TRILLVO Interview]

Written by Sina Watson

Earlier this year Duke Dumont debuted his first full-length album featuring some familiar favorites and introducing us to new ones. He finally gave his hit song “Ocean Drive,” a home, while showcasing his musical talents as a producer. Following the success of the album, he released a star studded remix album this month with remixes from house music biggest names such as Purple Disco Machine, Will Clarke, Tensake, and Kyle Kinch

There’s only one word to describe Tampa Bay House producer Kyle Kinch: Groovy. Deep rooted in his Jazz and Disco obsession, Kyle finesses these influences to blur the lines between house, disco, and techno.

Doing what he does best, Kyle flips the original ballad “The Fear,” for a more dancefloor ready tune. With a catchy groovy bassline and hypnotic rhythm, Kyle’s remix is sure to get your body moving.

I had the chance to chat with Kyle about quarantine and getting to remix a track for one of house music’s biggest arts, Duke Dumont.

Hey Kyle hows it hanging? What have you been doing this year to stay sane? Any new hobbies/skills?

I’ve been great. I’ve always been a gamer so my Nintendo Switch has been keeping me company. Also, I’m working on a new project with my album arts. I’ve been framing them and painting the frames with UV & glow in the dark paint. My wall looks crazy now basically lighting up my memories. Painting is super soothing and therapeutic.

What are you most grateful for right now?

I’m grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been given during this time. Believe or not, my career has continued to ramp up even with no gigs. I’ve been working with new artist and labels to consistently release music and doing features for huge publications like Forbes. Honestly, I feel stronger as an artist than I did before lockdown started.

As a former Tampa resident, I’d love to know how living in Tampa/Florida influenced your sound?

Tampa is all about energy. No matter what style of music, there’s always a high energy vibe here. I try to match that energy, but also try to add an emotional aspect to it. When they hear my music, I want people to feel me on multiple levels.

Ya dude I totally get that. I actually saw Duke Dumont for the first time at Beach Bar Labor Day weekend in Tampa. He was one of the first Djs to convert me to House music. What was it like remixing “The Fear”?

You know that feeling when you were meant for something? Like everything you’ve done up to that point prepared you for that moment. When Duke reached out to me I was crazy excited. Literally pacing around my house. After my last lap though, I sat down calm and determined with clear idea of where I was going with this remix.

Can you tell us more about your creative process for this track?

I wanted to capture that 4am warehouse vibe. A gritty driving style beat with dark synths to counter Duke’s version. I wanted to combination of Duke’s elements and mine to create a yin & yang balance within the track. If his was about the fear, I wanted mine to be no fear!

If you could remix another track from Duality which one would you choose and why?

Definitely “The Power”! I see so many possibilities with that vocal and the energy of the track. I would love to get my hands on that one.

2020 has been a big year of music for you: EP, Realm Release, and now your Duke Dumont Remix. Any other surprises in store for the rest of the year?

I just had another remix release on Simma Black. As for the rest of the year, you can expect a new release every month.

You’ve had the chance to release on some incredible house labels (Solotoko, Realm, Holy Mole music), is there a dream label you want to release on?

Defected and Toolroom. I feel like most house artist aspire for those labels, but I always find myself connecting to Defected’s releases spiritually. They’ve been the epitome of house music for a long time. As for Toolroom, Mark Knight was probably the heaviest influence on my music at the beginning. I still rinse his tracks on a daily basis.

Okay final question. What is your favorite Duke Dumont track?

“Won’t Look Back”

Travel Through Time with MizzMegan’s RV Edits EP [TRILLVO Premiere]

Written by Sina Watson

For Houston based DJ, MizzMegan, music has always been an essential piece of her life. Growing up she had a fascination with her grandparents’ vinyl records, and would alphabetize piles of 45s just for fun. At the young age of four she began taking dance classes, which exposed her to a wide variety of music genres ranging from R&B and Hip Hop to disco, pop, and early 90’s dance. Now after thirty years of dancing to other artists’ music, as a DJ and producer, she’s begun to soundtrack the rhythm to her life.

A self diagnosed “sucker for sax,” Megan finds comfort in creating dance music that’s rooted in jazz. Driven by percussive basslines, this tap dancer naturally gravitates to anything with a groovy beat, and her years spent in jazz band have given her an ear for funky sounds. Motivated by her curiosity and naturally creative spirit, making music has been a form of honoring her true self.

The last 2 years of her DJ career have been nothing short of monumental from hosting Justin Jay’s Fantastic Voyage Residency in Houston to opening up for Cut Snake at one of Houston’s largest nightclubs, Stereo Live. While she may be a fresh face to the world of electronic music, after spending years on stage, MizzMegan knows how to read an audience to deliver a one of a kind experience to her listeners.

Given her close connection and bond to Fantastic Voyage music, it only makes sense to release her debut edits EP, “RV Edits,” on the label. Paying tribute to some of her biggest influences Pharell, Lauryn Hill, Prince, and more, the 5 track EP is a road trip down memory lane as MizzMegan makes her favorite childhood tracks new again.

MizzMegan’s “RV Edits” EP drops tomorrow on Bandcamp and can be purchased here. Listen and preview her EP with the link below. Additionally, Megan walks us through her inspiration and creative process for each track.

When the Last Time
Having preformed countless dance numbers to the infectious hip-hop staples from Clipse and N.E.R.D, and Megan’s first ever edit, its only fair that it kicks off her epic EP.   Guided by the legendary sounds of classic ghettotech fused with hip-hop samples, she felt empowered by the chorus’ proposition, “when the last time you heard it like THIS?” This became the driving force behind the EP’s idea of making her old favorites new again.

“Starting to edit tracks I was already in love with was super intimidating; I didn’t want to ruin these epic songs! But the vocal on this chorus, “when the last time you heard it like this,” became really empowering as I ventured into this creative quest to make old songs feel new again.” – MizzMegan

Doo Wop (That Thing)
The second track on the EP is a tribute to Ms. Lauryn Hill’s iconic “Doo-Wop (That Thing)”. According to Megan, Hill’s Miseducation album is one of those albums that she can listen to from start to finish without skipping a track. Furthermore, Megan has many special memories dancing to this track, having preformed her first ever hip hop choreography to is as a kid. Going into its edit she had one goal: strip it down.  Then she let the harmonies and soul from the vocals speak for themselves as she built the track back up with a little taste of Caribbean steel drum and afro-cuban piano.

“I have a real love for the afro groove subgenre of house music, and these congas and claps with the tambourines just made me feel like I was getting down in a no-frills side-of-the-road island jam band.” –MizzMegan

Round and Round
Thanks to a music loving mother, the soundtrack to Megan’s childhood was a mix of Motown, funk, pop, disco, and 90s dance. Growing up her mother always had a heavy arsenal of Prince ready to hit play. Ironically, this classic Tevin Campbell track was actually produced by Prince bringing Megan’s musical journey full circle. Letting the original track take the lead, she cranked the bpm, sprinkled a little percussion on top and added a good kick and hi-hat to transform it for the dancefloor.

I let myself time travel right back to those sing-along days with my mom. I will always imagine her on every dancefloor with me when I play this new edit.”MizzMegan

Put Your Records On
Longing for the days of listening to her grandparents 45s, when Megan moved into her new home earlier this year, she vowed to pick up a record player and start her vinyl collection. A few months later, she found herself stuck inside her house due to the pandemic. This was the perfect opportunity to put her favorite records, making Corinne Bailey Rae‘s infectious track the official soundtrack to her chores. Soon her curiosity got the best of her and she began messing with the track to create an upbeat dancefloor edit. This edit had me dancing in my room with a big smile on my face while simultaneously looking up record players  online to start my own collection.

Breathe
The final track “Breathe,” was born during lockdown in the pandemic. According to Megan, the time spent alone took quite a toll on her mental health. Telepopmusik’s “Breathe,” really resonated with her as she awaited for life to return to normal.  The soothing melody of this early 2000’s electronic track was begging to be turned into a dance mix. Armed with her keyboard and no place to be for the foreseeable future, she got to work on making the track her own.

“The lyrics, “another day, just believe; another day, just breathe,” became somewhat of a mantra as the days turned to months… I could imagine the days when we would return to the dancefloor and float away on these dreamy synths and driving bass. This edit became my personal lullaby for the dancefloor.” –MizzMegan

I met MizzMegan over a year ago when I first relocated to Houston. Bonded by disco balls and our love of house music and Justin Jay we’ve become quite close the last year. She was one of my first friends in Houston and exposed me to Houston House and the underground dive scene. I am so incredibly proud of MizzMegan and her “RV Edits,” on Fantastic Voyage Music. Her appreciation and understanding for all genres of music is truly inspiring and I feel so blessed to have such a genuine soul in my life.

SSKWAN Stuns with Pyschedelic Second Release “It Goes in Waves” by INZO, Blookah, and Align

Written by Sina Watson

Liquid Stranger is wasting no time in delivering dynamic and breathtaking music on his new downtempo label SSKWAN. Last month the record label debuted with Au5‘s 5 track Alchemy EP, which was widely received by fans, receiving thousands of listens.

SSKWAN’s second release, “It Goes in Waves,” is a psychedelic collaboration from Wakaan alums INZO and Blookah, as we welcome newcomer Align. At 130 bpm the three artists come together to create one incredible journey for its listeners.

Touching on psychedelic and spiritual influences, “It Goes in Waves,” begins with a beautiful intro before whisking its listeners away into a blissful dreamscape. The heavenly synths transports you into the clouds, while the bass brings you back to center. I’m not sure if it was the stress of this year or that combined with the 5 sticks of incense I burned today, but a few tears were shed while listening to this beautiful track. I found comfort and peace between its bass line and trippy melody.

INZO is a no stranger to Wakaan family having played the inaugural festival last year as well support on Liquid Stranger’s most recent tour. Having had the chance to sit down with him last year when he stopped in Houston, I’m a huge fan of INZO’s creative process and his ability as an artist to construct a profound and emotional atmosphere for his fans. Not limiting himself to just one genre, INZO consistently delivers euphoric melodies and rhythmically savvy percussion with a high production value.

“…There was a psychedelic inspiration that we all shared, that we felt this song summarized during its creation. The theme & experience of that psychedelic inspiration was that it came and went in waves, hence “It Goes In Waves.”INZO

This is the second collaboration for INZO and Align, after teaming up last year for their heart wrenching vocal track “Notions.” As a huge fan of both artist’s individual music as well as “Notions”, I was excited to see them in the studio again.

Chicago producer Align is known for creating thought provoking music for the everyday listener. He has appeared alongside Louis the Child, Hayden James and Thomas Jack. Earlier this year he released “Reflections,” featuring Jenni Potts who is known for her vocals on Odesza’s “White Lies.”

“…We had put down a bunch of heavier and more dance ideas, and we were all ready to make something that was a lot more downtempo. We went into creating this track with with that in mind, and started it goes in waves. The three of us continued taking turns adding elements and ideas to the project, and the process went incredibly quickly.”Align

Midwest beat maker Blookah, has developed a laid-back and chilled-out sound, drawing from old school boom-bap-era hip-hop production and modern dance music.

“…This vibey tune invites the listener to explore their inner muses while journeying through waves of face scrunching bass and knocking production wrapped in heavenly synths. Like modern day life, the analog and digital interact harmoniously here and create a meditative space worthy of both headphones and large festival sound systems.”Blookah

I hope INZO lets everyone back into his studio soon because my ears are ready to ride the wave of these 3 artists. Until then I’ll be burning more incense and playing this track on repeat for the remainder of 2020.

MASTERIA Shows Softer Side of Dark House with “Don’t Want You”

Written by Sina Watson

Detroit House producer MASTERIA continues to cause “Mayhem” in 2020 with one fresh house track after another. He is back once again with another infectious tune. Showcasing his versatility and softer side, “Don’t Want You,” puts an optimistic spin on an otherwise dark emotion.

The track begins with a male vocal, declaring “I don’t want you anymore.” Does this mean MASTERIA and I are breaking up?! Oh no he is saying it again, so it must be true. Soon I hear the familiarity of the deep and dark bassline MASTERIA brings to each one of his tracks. Next thing I know the beat drops into a bouncy perfection for shuffling the heartbreak away.

When creating “Don’t Want You,” I wanted to capture the emotional energy and intensity that we experience when we decide to walk away from something that was a significant part of our lives. Whether it be leaving a relationship, a career change, or starting a new chapter in life and walking away from what was familiar. Turning those pages in our lives is tough and can bring intense emotions along with it, but experiencing those emotions is what makes us who we are. It’s part of what makes us human. With this track, I wanted to frame that type of energy in a positive way. A way that makes you want to dance while doing the dishes, or walk a bit faster while you’re going down the street.” – MASTERIA
