Women Strong Artist Spotlight – Farrah

If I wasn’t already a huge Farrah stan, this month’s spotlight surely turned me. Women’s Month is all about giving women back the voice they’ve always had. Having the honor to speak with such a gem, who also has a great head on her shoulders, not just making dope music, filled me with joy! After hearing about her journey through music from a very young age and struggling with her identity as a producer in her hometown of Hong Kong, I find a new connection to the artist.

Farrah is a DJ and producer who has been making waves all year long. Starting with her release on the Electric Hawk In Unity compilation, “Boiling,” which blew us all away. And from there, Farrah’s career has skyrocketed giving her the opportunities to reach her fullest potential. Obviously COVID has caused us all a great deal of pains and struggles, but we talk with Farrah about the different positives it has brought to her and her musical journey.

Farrah is someone who has always deserved the spotlight, and I am more than glad to give it to her. Her dark and moody bass is something of such a unique style, if this is your first encounter with Farrah, you are in for a sure treat.

Be sure to keep an eye out for Farrah’s Artist Spotlight Mix, coming out later this week!

Happy International Women’s Month, go stream a woman’s music today!

Women Strong Spotlight – KENDALL MILO

Happy International Women’s Month everybody! An entire month where I can focus on nothing but all the boss ass women who are dominating the industry. I find such inspiration from women in music. Not only me being a woman, but seeing such power and boss energy radiate has to be inspiring for anyone. I had the honor to sit down and talk with a handful of my favorite women in the industry this month and put the spotlight on them.

As we know, girls are taking over just about every aspect of the music industry. The true heart beat of so many successful men and their careers in this world is the women on their teams. From management, to marketing, to PR and literally anything in between; women are making it their forte.

I start this month off with Kendall Milo. Kendall is a 22 year old powerhouse of hospitality and marketing. She is currently the assistant marketing director at The Intersection, a local venue in Grand Rapids. While holding a very specific title, Kendall still wears many hats at the venue. Leading the street team, heading the hospitality department, and even handling merchandise for the venue.

Kendall is the perfect example of falling into a position and taking it to the moon. She started as your average raver in love with the culture, going to school for hospitality and being heavily involved in school activities such as student council and the pom team. But much like the rest of us, Kendall fell in love with the dance music world, realized she had something to offer it, and made it work in the best way for her.

She got her feet wet when she was offered an opportunity to go on tour with Excision’s merch team in 2018 while in her freshman year of college. She was able to get this put towards her internship hours for school, killing two birds with one stone. From there, Kendall made loads of friends and connections that also opened the next door for her into the music industry

I had been backstage, I had seen the behind the scenes of everything. But I had never been in the position where I was contributing things, so getting to do that changed the game.

– Kendall Milo

She was asked to work on the hospitality team for the 515 Festival in Iowa where she worked with artists like Future and Lil Xan. This was the initial spark for her, when she realized music was her place. Kendall then did freelance hospitality work at festivals like Electric Forest until accepting her position at The Intersection.

A true lover of music who stumbled into a world and made it into her career, Kendall is such an inspiration. Not many people in this industry have true and genuine intentions, but Kendall has a passion for music that shines so brightly and is poured into her work.

“Being able to curate a good time for my friends, that’s what I care about.”

Women bring a different touch and energy to everything they do. Our passion and connection to the things we do makes it so much more special. Kendall is just one of the many women doing many amazing things in our music world. And they all deserve a little time in the spotlight.

Yaeji Returns with an Infectious New Single from her Upcoming Mixtape

Written by Eric Gonzalez

After quite some time without releasing a full-length project, NYC producer Yaeji has announced her forthcoming mixtape, WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던, is to be released April 2nd via XL Recordings. The Korean-American DJ is best known for producing deep house tunes with hip-hop elements that usually involve her mellow vocals, both in English and Korean. One of the first tracks Yaeji has already released from this mixtape is titled “Waking Up Down”.

attached-wakingupdown-1

Photo taken from Facebook

The track’s baseline is layered up between a soul-hugging melody and loosened riffs that turn it into a soothing dance-floor banger. The rhythmic drums with Yaeji‘s soft vocal takes you into a hazy exploration of healing by fixating on the idea that small victories are still victories. Some of the Korean lyrics she uses as a hook translate into, “it’s not easy/There’s no such thing as easy/If I’m lazy/They all say it’s my fault,” which aims at pushing the idea that success isn’t final and failure isn’t fatal. Alongside the track she also released a beautifully illustrated music video with some of the additional illustrations by Annie Zhao and production by Studio Yotta. Watch the video below!

Catch Yaeji, joined by Jessy Lanza, on her “WHAT WE DREW” Tour which will be hitting Houston September 26. The producer also plans on donating $1 from all ticket sales to a charity based on the stop. June shows will be dedicated to the Trans Life Line, September shows will be for the Soul Fire Farm, while the Toronto stop will be for Shelbourne’s Health Center and the Vancouver show for the Indigenous Climate Action Group. Head over to yaeji.com for any additional information such as presales and tour stops!

Women of Houston: Meet Melissa Jo of The Glitter Trove

There’s very few things that everyone can agree on these days – one of those being.. GLITTER. Who doesn’t love to sparkle and shine!? Melissa Jo is working to bring the sparkle to Houston, one glitter kimono at a time!

Glitter and sparkles are a staple in the EDM community and we met up with Glitter Trove founder and artist, Melissa Jo, to discuss all things shiny. As a successful entrepreneur in Houston we were eager to pick her brain.

TRILLVO: “What is the Glitter Trove and how did it come to life?”

Melissa: “The Glitter Trove is a collection of  all things glittery! It is kimonos, jackets, sunglasses, face jewels – anything sparkling. I’m a custom order business, made to order – my customers come to me with a vision including colors and sequin size and I make them a pic stitch board and I bring their creation to life. It came to life last year during Hurricane Harvey. I’ve always made my own random pieces to wear to festivals and after going to Middlelands I received a lot of questions about where I got my pieces. So during Hurricane Harvey instead of going to the store to buy survival food I went to the fabric store and I saw my first bolt of fabric and went home and ran with it! The Little Mermaid has her Treasure Trove and now I have my Glitter Trove. I’ve just been bringing glitter-y magical things to people that want extravagant electric clothing since.”

TRILLVO: “You definitely found the silver lining from Hurricane Harvey. Where do you find inspiration?”

Melissa: “My inspiration comes from when I was a little girl coming from wanting to be a mermaid and/or unicorn and/or Spice Girl and basically just bringing that to life. Looking at a leather jacket that might be messed up and think to myself that would look so cool with sequin patches on it. My inspiration comes from looking at things and combining them together and creating something totally new.”

Cute AF Chokers from glittertrove.com

TRILLVO: “That’s amazing! Speaking of creating what advice would you have for a young women aspiring to be an entrepreneur like yourself?”

Melissa: “Don’t give up and never get discouraged. Living the adult life trying to crush having a house, bills, full time job, etc. I’ll sometimes sit in my studio and think “What am I doing?!” and

Rule #1 – Follow your dreams
Rule #2 – Don’t give up
Rule #3 – Follow rule #1 and #2

Don’t ever get discouraged… There’s gonna be things that you’ll see that will discourage you but you have to remember evil and hate are all around us and evil and hate with ALWAYS try to throw you off course. You just have to keep on moving through it! Stat positive. If you have faith in it and believe in it your dream WILL become a reality”

Melissa Jo and The Glitter Trove can often be found vending various events throughout Houston as well as through their Instagram and website. Be sure to keep up with Melissa and all of her glitter magic! We are so grateful for her time and contributions to the community!

Local Lowdown: Zinnia

Easily one of the most positive people we’ve met, we’re proud to have Zinnia on the TRILLVO 2nd Annual Women Strong Charity Show line-up! From her passionate personality to her love for the arts, it’s so obvious to see why we can’t wait for her set and why we want you to get to know her as well.

Zinnia, a.k.a Brooke O’Donnell, hails from Denton, TX and brings a new, spicy flavor to the music we listen to. However, why not let the woman herself tell you who she is? It’s hard to describe just who Zinnia is and the way she conducts herself, so we asked her two questions and let her answer with as much detail as she would like. After being asked when she first discovered her love for DJing, Zinnia had this to say:

I have always admired the idea of being a “disk jockey” because my mom raised me on artists like RJD2 & Nightmares on Wax, but growing up I can’t lie, I never saw myself being behind the decks performing my music.

(Fun Fact: Until a few months ago, I had the worst stage fright…)

34070297_176921456352845_7014835673555271680_n

I began to learn the ropes of audio engineering at the age of 15 & eventually fell in love with the production process of EDM. I took a year off of school after I graduated HS & to think about what path I was going to take & I chose Community College down in San Marcos, TX.

When I dropped out of college (mind you, it only took me 5 weeks to realize it wasn’t for me), I decided to give my entirety to production. After finding likeminded creators, I discovered how much the stuff I was trying to produce coincided with the idea of DJing live music. So, at the age of 19 I bought my first Traktor S2 & since then it’s been effortless to find the flow in spinning what I love.

I think a lot of artists & DJ’s take for granted the platform we have & forget to find the root of what it is all about. To me, it’s always been perceived as THE most powerful platform on this planet. The fact that ONE human has the ability to bring individuals together (whether it be 20 people or 100,000 people) from all sorts of different backgrounds, different political/ religious beliefs, divided moralistic derivatives, & so forth, & get all of these people to shut the fuck up about the down right madness occurring in the world & just jam out to the same wave/ sounds of music at the same time in unison & harmony … THAT is what brings my soul to its sense of fulfillment when stepping behind that dj booth & playing in front of those people who all showed up for the same reason: love for the music.

I booked my first event in December of 2017 & at first I only booked 4 events within the first 6 months of debuting “Zinnia” as a DJ. In August of 2018, I was blessed with finding a manager (shoutout to Syd) who never doubted my potential/lacked faith in my visions & since she discovered me at an underground event in Austin, TX, our momentum in collaborating has been catching unfathomable speeds.

Since she found me, she’s helped me book the shows that have helped me find my confidence & love for performing.

From August of 2018 to now (Feb/Mar 2019) I have played in Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, & I have landed my first headlining show/event, booked my first summer festival, locked in my first SXSW showcases (actually as of now I have four bookings..holy shit this is still crazy to me!!!), I have been local support for artists such as PhaseOne, Yookie, Slimez, Havoc Roth, Blaize, KawtNKandy, Mystic Grizzly, Pixel Terror, Hi I’m Ghost, Hairitage, & so on…(holy shit I didn’t realize how many epic artists I’ve played alongside until I just made that list wowowow!).

ALAS, to answer the initial question, if I had to give an exact moment that I fell in love with being the one who is the source of music playing/DJing, it was the moment I had the courage to play an entirely original track in front of an audience and then saw the way it made them move…TO THE SONG THAT I MADE…like NOTHING compares to that righteousness…”

Passion as raw as Zinnia’s is hard to come by, and you don’t always see it boldly expressed. Her love for music has been nurtured since she was young, and she has the personality to match her eccentric style. Of course, speaking about the past and present is much easier than to, say, talk about your future and your end-goals. We wanted to know just what exactly is Zinnia’s greatest dream music-wise? What does she want to achieve? Her answer may just blow you away.

51094009_296411397737183_8024135722346741760_n

“My end goal as a creator is to create an organization that raises awareness on how crucial musical arts is in a child’s development. I grew up wanting to teach for as long as I can remember, I even took courses at the “Advanced Technology Center” that my school district provided for the upperclassmen to have hands on experience in whichever field they were wanting to pursue in college. Mine was teaching & I got to student teach 1st graders for an entire school year!
My love for teaching only grew more, but I quickly read into how corrupt the education system was. I eventually realized there was nothing I could do for the masses of kiddos that were struggling to form to the cookie cutter outline their educators were obligated to provide for them EXCEPT for me to become a politician…& well…pardon my french, but fuck all that.
I was torn on what to go to school for which is why I took a year off before going to college. I decided to pursue my love for music & was going to go to school for business so that I could someday open my own music venue. Well, schooling only caused my love for music to burn out & I came to a point in which I needed to make a decision for myself & what my soul was yearning for me to pursue. I knew right away I needed to listen to my urges to pursue music as a creator & the rest was going to intuitively would fall into place.
I found peace in my pursuits as a producer/dj when I began to volunteer as a mentor at my local Boy’s & Girls Club. I was able to create as well as fulfill my dream of being involved with kiddos, (’twas a very symbolic time in my life & the immense self discovery was at it’s peak). They showed me how crucial music is in their lives & how important having the tools to create in any form is for them. It blessed me with the epiphany/answer the answer to this question, “what was the most steady/consistent thing in your life as a child?” & that is music. Interest in physical activities such as sports fade & are not promised, but when you think about the music you ran to when life got confusing as a kid, it was always there to give you the guaranteed emotion you found in it.
I never cared about being famous or making sure everyone has heard of “Zinnia” until discovering that my purpose is to use my platform to fund the dream I have to provide kids in third world countries with classes, instruments & the tools to create & learn whatever it is that their soul seems to groove along to! I plan to begin with my local communities & giving back to nonprofits such as B&G Club, & once I am able to have a voice that will reach the ears of likeminded “doers”, I hope to find the funds to provide these dreams of mine with everything it needs to come to fruition.
Producing & DJing is seen as a gift from The Universe for following my souls purpose, because this experience is such an epic & fun chapter in my life that its truly seen as a reward for finding what my purpose is so early on…I GET TO RAGE & PARTY WITH SO MANY FRIENDS & GROOVY PEOPLE ALL THE TIME LIKE WHAT THE HECK? HOW COOL IS THAT & HOW BLESSED AM I?….But truly, I am focused on how my existence is still standing because I am meant to help humans evolve as a species, but the immense gratitude I involuntarily carry in this colorful chapter that I get to live in the mean time makes my days of being alive feel like a celebration!!”

Pure, raw, and transparent. Zinnia’s trajectory has only been upward this year, and as she continues to amass bookings, you’ll start to hear her name more frequently. However, don’t think that because she has good intentions that her music does as well. She’s thrown it down all over the state of Texas. Make sure to check her socials out below to find what’s new with her, and be prepared to catch her live at the TRILLVO 2nd Annual Women Strong Charity Show!

I’ll start by saying this would be a good time to drop the catnip before you read further ahead. Ready? Put your paws together for and give a big round of Meows for FreakMeowt AKA Samantha Lewis!

sama3

Samantha Lewis was born and raised in Louisiana then moved to Houston at 18 years old, where she found a passion for Djing. Two years later, she is still Djing and has even began producing an EP as of most recent. She is not done traveling however, as she is expanding her horizons to Los Angeles. She hopes to connect with more producers as she molds her craft. Aiming to ultimately travel the world and spread positivity through her music.

IMG_4174

You can expect to hear FreakMeowt mixing up her favorite genres which include Trap, Dubstep, & Future Bass. So you can expect all sorts of craziness at the TRILLVO 2nd Annual Women Strong Charity Show from FreakMeowt, this is your fair warning.

52082318_2232238150172010_6244030082059337728_o

Some of her inspirations come from Alison Wonderland who just so happened to be the first show she ever went to, and she is also big Mac Miller fan (RIP). She also is heavily inspired by her spirit animal which just so happens to be Cats! Fancy that huh? So if you see her Djing and so happen to see cat ears coming out of her headphones when she is throwing down her set, those are for the cat loving bass heads in the crowd.

FreakMeowt’s message is simple, she wants people to be inspired to live in the moment and chase their dreams. She wants to draw on your emotions through the music she plays so that you can feel what she does as she takes you through an emotional roller coaster that is her set.

sama2

FreakMeowt is honored and proud to be playing the Annual Women’s show that is bringing together everybody to benefit women who have suffered through domestic abuse as it is a touching subject due to her having unfortunately experienced it herself and now that she is in a position to give back she wants to do just that.

sama

I honestly can’t wait for the positive emotions that will pour into the night of the women’s show that we will get to share during FreakMeowt’s set. Be sure to giver her all the meows she can handle that night! See you guys then!

Artist Spotlight: Say Hello To Trizm

Written by:

Michael Placencia

For our 2nd featured female artist on our road to the Trillvo/Virtuosos Women’s Charity event, we proudly introduce Trizm. Trizm, aka Stephanie Huynh, has been an avid fan of EDM for years. She was also a beloved member of the Trillvo team before she headed on to new endeavors. So we here at Trillvo are more than thrilled to have her return with a performance we’re sure will be great.

We were fortunate enough to interview Stephanie by asking some questions that gave us a look at the world through Trizm’s eyes. When asked what the origin of Trizm was, this is what she had to say:

“The number 3 has always been my favorite and as a kid, I had a fascination with prism designs too. I was just sitting there one day and the idea to combine the things I love together and that’s when Trizm became a thing. I combined Tri, which means 3, and the word prism with the letter Z.”

When it came to being introduced to the scene, Stephanie explained that her interest began in middle school. Ever since her uncle played a Dash Berlin cd for her, EDM gained a huge spot in Stephanie’s heart. Although once she attended her first festival,(Something Wicked) she truly began to allow EDM to change her life in the most positive way. We also asked the big question of what made Stephanie want to become a dj. Here’s what her response was:

“I wanted to become a DJ because EDM became such a huge part of my life throughout college. It got me through a lot of tough times and every time I went to a show, it made me forget what was going on in life and just to enjoy what was going on at the time. Getting that feeling, I wanted to do that for others and that’s when I decided to give DJ-ing a try.”

Stephanie also channels her love of EDM through artists that have influenced her such as: AC Slater, Wax Motif, Flava D, Chris Lorenzo, Dr. Fresch, TS7, and many more. If you couldn’t already tell, this lady is definitely a diehard House fan. As for what she hopes to accomplish in the next few years, Stephanie expressed her determination of wanting to play more shows in Houston and also to learn how to produce House music.

Stephanie has not only been a great team member, worker, friend, and artist…she’s also a great person too. There are very few female House djs in Houston, but it appears that Trizm is surely about to change that. You can catch Trizm at the 2nd Annual Women’s Strong Charity event. And be sure to follow her on all of her socials posted below.

Ducky Delivers a Stunning EP, Perfect for Valentines Day; I Still Believe In Love [Review]

Written By RayTrill Harvey

Ducky, one of our favorite producers of the last couple of years and headliner of our Woman Strong: Charity Show, unleashes a powerful EP on Valentine’s day about Heartbreak and Recovery. The EP follows a break up and exhibits the raw emotion she felt during the creative process.

“Basically this EP chronicles me healing from my last breakup – from “Day Zero,” which I wrote on the night we split, to the ending track that I wrote when I’d finally moved on. I also feel like you should know that I literally cried the whole time I wrote “Day Zero” specifically, which I think actually looked pretty funny once I got to like the technical mix-down work.” – Ducky; in an interview with Nest HQ

Ducky

Ducky; From her IG @QuackHouse

Day Zero, the track she wrote on the night of the split, is a powerfully stunning song that places her emotions of the break up on a pedastool for fans to relate to. It’s the kind of song that pulls a tear from you when you listen to it. From start to finish, a work of art. It’s the kind of song you put on repeat and blast while you cry and dance around your room to try and relieve heart ache.

I still believe in love, The track Day Zero leads into and the title track of the EP, is a song made by a woman healing and taking back control of her heart. She acknowledges how much she misses her ex but also is firm in her declaration that she will be alright and still believes she will love again. You can hear hints of her electro roots in the build that lead into a strong chorus that brings with it a vigorous energy of growth.

I’m afraid of everything is about a girl learning to live without someone she was with. It’s a song about someone who is scared to journey into the world alone but knows she can do it and will never give up. This message speaks and relates to just about everyone on the planet after a breakup. It’s a future bass bop with an uplifting beat that can carry you into the next journey of life

The finale track, “Im Worth It“, is the track she wrote when she finally moved on! It’s about her finally realizing how much love she truly deserves! She speaks about how she no longer cares about her ex and is focused on her and how she came to terms with her own self worth. It’s a beautiful track with claps that could make an entire audience join in. and a drop that is probably the most beautiful on the EP, a courage filled triumphant sound that really works together with the lyrics in a beautiful way.

What’s really amazing about this EP besides the production (All Her) the lyrics and vocals (All Her) is it details a story, the story of day one of a breakup all the way to recovery and moving on. She wrote each track when she felt it and you can, in turn, feel it in the music. It’s a beautiful 4 chapter book of sound and deserves to be heard by as many people as possible.

You can catch DUCKY headlining our Woman Strong Charity show on international woman’s day, MARCH 8th in Houston @ Ayva Center, complete with a silent auction and ticket sales that ALL go to The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, a foundation that helps victims of domestic abuse.

Artist Spotlight: Meet Phaerie

Written by: Michael Placencia

With the Houston EDM local music scene continuously rising, so does the amount of female artists. The most newest of these, is none other than Phaerie – aka, Hannah Crotts. This woman may be a fresh new DJ, but she’s already showcased some major skill and we were eager to learn more.

Hannah first started her foray into EDM music at the age of 6 years old. As she would go in her garage and dance to various CDs. From there, she slowly began to gravitate towards newer genres, but didn’t become fully immersed until she attended her first music festival: Middlelands. This was what also inspired her to become both a DJ and a producer after seeing how much the artists didn’t just have fun, but also how they made her feel from their music. As far as influences go, some of Hannah’s major influential artists include the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Eric Prydz, and most importantly, Above & Beyond. Trance is Hannah’s specialty, and after seeing her DJ debut on her birthday at Gravity, she’s more than proved herself to rightfully earn her spot as a strong female DJ.

We were eager to learn what “Phaerie” means so Hannah filled us in:

“For me Phaerie represents the things we value as kids but lose when we grow up – a wild imagination, the sense of wonder at the world, the belief that everyone is good and the belief in yourself… There’s also a part of fantasy to it – believing in magic and things unseen. When you grow up you might stop believing in magical things but you can always hold on to the unseen – love, willing something to happen, and positive energy. The triangle in my logo is a symbol for healing and that’s exactly what I want my music to do for people.”

When asked what she hopes to accomplish within the next few years, this is what Hannah had to say:

“Producing is just now becoming more enjoyable than frustrating lol! It’s a huge motivator to keep learning and growing as an artist, so releasing original tracks is definitely at the top of the list. Ultimately, getting to work with some of the artists that have inspired me would be an absolute dream come true. I’d love to start playing in other cities so I can meet and learn from their local artists as well.”

Hannah may just be getting started as a DJ and producer, but she surely is on her way to greatness. With her love of Trance shining as she beautifully mixes it within her sets clearly emulates the amount of passion, devotion, and love into her craft. You can catch Hannah/Phaerie at the 2nd Annual Trillvo Women Strong Charity Event – brought to you by both Trillvo and Virtuosos. For more info on the Women Strong Charity Event click here!
